Pastor Adolph Franz Hermann Baltzer

1817 – 1880

Issued in Berlin on July 14, 1845, by the Minister of the Interior on behalf of King Frederick William IV of Prussia, this passport was granted to 27-year-old Adolph Baltzer just prior to his departure for America. The document — readable in the viewer above — names his destination explicitly: "von hier über Bremen auf Nord-America" (from here via Bremen to North America). Baltzer departed shortly after, sailing from Bremen aboard the ship Minna and arriving in New York City on October 4, 1845, accompanied by fellow pastors Joseph Rieger and William Binner. The original document (13 inches × 18 inches) is held in the collection of the Archives at Eden Theological Seminary.
